Constable Ken Anderson

Constable Ken Anderson
Winnipeg Police Service

Constable Ken Anderson is helping disadvantaged boys from inner-city Winnipeg learn the value of First Nations teachings. He was instrumental in developing the Aboriginal Cultural Program for Boys, which has been running once a week since April 2002, and includes sports-related activities as well as field trips to First Nations ceremonies.

The program is designed for boys between the ages of seven and 17 who are considered at risk for offending behaviour. One group of participants had been referred to the program after they were caught committing acts of vandalism on school property.

The goal of the program is to decrease the risk of criminal involvement for high-risk children by promoting cultural awareness and identity. The program strives to build young people's self-esteem and confidence through positive experiences.

Anderson plays a key role in the program by participating as an active member and positive role model for the youths. The program is also run by a community outreach worker and a coordinator from the Lord Selkirk Aboriginal Women's Group.
