The region of Halton, Ont., is delivering a comprehensive approach to youth crime under the dedicated leadership of Superintendent Dan Okuloski. This approach includes an early intervention and crime prevention strategy for children under 12, a pre-charge diversion program for youth at risk of getting into trouble with the law, and a restorative justice conferencing program. These programs are designed to help young people see their offending behaviour within a larger social context.

A few years ago, Okuloski outlined a model for the restorative justice conferencing program and secured funding to train its volunteer facilitators, who are responsible for bringing together victims of youth crime, offenders, and supporters in an effort to come up with a resolution to the incident. This program is designed to offer timely interventions for youth in conflict with the law, and with Okuloski's support and guidance, community volunteers are achieving this goal.
