Constable Nathalie Legros
Service de police de la ville de Montréal
Montréal, Quebec
In the summer of 2001, Constable Nathalie Legros teamed up with a local artist and nine troubled youths to help solve Montreal's graffiti problem. As part of Constable Legros' Youth Creation (Création Jeunesse) project, the youths produced five colourful murals gracing the streets of the Mont-Royal district. A local youth justice committee sponsored by Quebec's Department of Health and Social Services, Trajet Jeunesse, had chosen the youths to create the murals as an alternative to formal court proceedings.
Through their work with Constable Legros and local artist Catherine Gagnon, the youths learned they were capable of contributing to the community while trying out a new skill. The project also helped local citizens feel safer in their surroundings and there were fewer cases of graffiti after the murals had been painted.
Constable Legros has worked hard to make the project a success. She not only thought of the idea for the creative project, she also organized the funding, and encouraged local businesses to donate walls to be used as sites for the murals. This hands-on approach to youth justice has earned Constable Legros well-deserved recognition.
