Constable Greg Ericson
RCMP, Turtle Mountain Detachment
Killarney, Manitoba
Through his involvement in community-based projects, Constable Greg Ericson has shown a strong commitment to helping troubled youth turn their lives around. He has brought together a group of volunteers from the community and surrounding area of Killarney, Manitoba, to form The Killarney and District Justice Committee. Members of this committee are dedicated to finding meaningful ways of dealing with young people who get into trouble with the law. The committee can assign community service work, essays, mediation sessions, or a variety of other consequences designed to hold the youth accountable for his or her offending behaviour. This gives the youth a chance to right the wrong without the implication of a criminal record, and provides a forum for reconciliation with the community.
While the committee deals with both youth and adults, most of its clients are under 18 years of age and the committee often deals with children under the age of 12 who have come into conflict with the law.
A member of the justice committee, Randy Hodge, has nominated Constable Ericson for contributing to the program's success. Constable Ericson has spent many of his off-duty hours giving the committee advice and has encouraged several community leaders to get involved with the committee.
Constable Ericson also participates in the Youth Assistance Program, a preventative program designed to help troubled youth from the local school district. As part of the Youth Assistance Program, any of the committee members - who come from various agencies relating to health care, education, and law enforcement - can present the name of a youth who is experiencing problems with drugs, alcohol, or family abuse. After a round-table discussion, an appropriate member of the committee will approach the youth to discuss his or her problems. Constable Ericson has been acknowledged as a great information source when helping youth in trouble with the law.
