On March 16, The Honourable Rob Nicholson, Q.C., Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, announced a $52 million boost to programs, services and funding for victims of crime over the next four years.
The new funds, available April 1, will help federal, provincial and territorial governments respond to a variety of emerging issues facing victims of crime across the country. The funds will enhance victim support and participation within the criminal justice system and federal corrections, including first response service delivery, court-based services, services for victims of offenders under federal jurisdiction and assistance for those currently underserved by existing programs. Some of the new money will also be targeted to assist victims in the North and Canadians victimized abroad.
The majority of the new Justice funding will enhance the existing Victims Fund.
More details on the new funding will be available in April .
