OTTAWA, February 20, 2008 - The Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointments:
The Honourable Mr. Justice Robert J. Bauman , a Judge with the Supreme Court of British Columbia is appointed a Judge of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia. Mr. Justice Bauman is replacing Mr. Justice I. T. Donald ( Vancouver), who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Bauman was appointed a Judge with the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1996. Mr. Justice Bauman has been Chair of the Supreme Court civil law committee since 2005 and a member of the Provincial Attorney General Rules Committee since 2004. He was a lawyer with Bull Housser & Tupper in Vancouver from 1982 to 1984 and was a partner from 1984 to 1996. In addition, Mr. Justice Bauman was partner with Wilson, Bauman, in Kelowna, British Columbia from 1977 to 1981, and an associate and Partner with Wilson, King & Co., in Prince George British Columbia from 1975 to 1977.
The Honourable Susan A. Griffin, Q.C. , a lawyer with Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP in Vancouver, British Columbia is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Madam Justice Griffin is replacing Madam Justice Marion F. Allan ( Vancouver), who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Madam Justice Griffin received a Master of Laws with distinction from the University of London, U.K. in 1992, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law in 1984. She was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in August 1985. Madam Justice Griffin has been a partner of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP since 1999. She was a partner of Roberts, Muir & Griffin in Vancouver from 1989 to 1999, and an associate of Roberts & Associates in Vancouver from 1985 to 1989. She has developed a practice expertise in general litigation practice.
The Honourable Deborah K. Lovett, Q.C. , a lawyer with Lovett & Westmacott in Victoria British Columbia is appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia. Madam Justice Lovett is replacing Mr. Justice D. F. Tysoe ( Vancouver) who was appointed to the Court of Appeal.
Madam Justice Lovett received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Victoria, and a Bachelor of Arts (English) from the University of Victoria in 1980. She was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1999 and was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in May 1981. Madam Justice Lovett is presently a self employed lawyer with the law firm, Lovett & Westmacott in Victoria. She was previously employed with Legal Services Branch, British Columbia, Ministry of the Attorney General from 1984 to 1997. She has developed a practice expertise in Administrative, Labour, Constitutional Law, Environmental, Employment, and Human Rights Law. In addition Madam Justice Lovett was an Intergovernmental Relations Officer/Cabinet Officer, for the Cabinet Secretariat, at the BC Ministry of Intergovernmental Relations from September 1981 to September 1984, and an investigator for the Office of the Ombudsman in 1981. She is a past member of the Law Society Discipline Committee.
These appointments are effective immediately.
