OTTAWA, December 15, 2006 - The Honourable Vic Toews, Q.C., Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:
The Honourable Gaston Jorré, the Senior Deputy Commissioner of Competition with the Competition Bureau in Ottawa/Gatineau is appointed a Judge of the Tax Court of Canada. He replaces Mr. Justice D.W. Beaubier who elected to become a supernumerary judge.
Mr. Justice Gaston Jorré received a Bachelor of Civil Law in 1975 and a Bachelor of Common Law in 1974 from McGill University, a Master of Economics in 1971 from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours Economics) in 1970 from McGill University. He was admitted to the Bar of Quebec in 1976 and the Bar of Ontario in 1978. Mr. Justice Jorré has developed his expertise in tax law, tax litigation and competition law throughout his 30 year career with the federal civil service in the Tax Litigation Section at the Department of Justice; in the Tax Counsel Division, Department of Finance and, since 2000, with the Competition Bureau. He has lectured on tax and competition law at several Canadian Bar Association conferences.
This appointment is effective immediately.
