COMPETITION TRIBUNAL APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED  

OTTAWA, June 24, 2005- Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, today announced the following appointment:

The Honourable Michael L. Phelan of Ottawa is appointed a Judge of the Competition Tribunal.

Mr. Justice Phelan received a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University in 1971 and was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1973.

In 2003, he was appointed a judge of the Federal Court of Canada. Prior to his initial appointment to the Bench, Mr. Justice Phelan was a partner with the firm Osler Hoskins & Harcourt.

This appointment is effective immediately.
